  1. Students in my class collaborated in small groups to create a Sumerian city state. The goal of the collaboration was for students to review what components/elements comprise an anciet city state (ie water source, farmland, buildings, social classes, examples of culture, etc.). Since we had studied this material earlier in the, students applied their working knowledge of the material by giving a visual representation of the city state — drawing one on a piece of poster board. Students assumed different roles during the activity; a) some were responsible for making sure their area of expertise was conveyed on the poster, and 2) students divided up jobs for the actual making of the poster…artists, writers, proofreader, etc.
