Assessing collaborative projects

One of the topics that we discussed in our department meeting this afternoon was the observation that even when the students are asked to work together collaboratively on a project, many of them work independently and then just mash their individual contributions together.  (I’ve already heard students splitting up their introduction to their research project this way…”If there are 3 paragraphs and each of us does one paragraph…”)  This has made me think about how we as teachers assess the collaboration and what I can do to increase the amount of true collaboration that is actually occurring.

  1. Useful collaboration is still occurring when students divide and conquer. It is an important skill to be able to work with others and make decisions regarding who will be responsible for each task. The key will be to assess whether the seperate parts all fit together and the final desired outcome is achieved.
